LJI Choir Wins Highest Honor In State

The Lake Jackson Intermediate School Men’s Choir has been selected as an All-State Honor Choir for 2009-2010. This is the highest award for a school musical organization in the state of Texas. They were selected via recorded audition and competed against schools from all over the state. They will be going to the Texas Music Educator’s Association annual convention in San Antonio in February of 2010 and will perform a concert there.

The Lake Jackson choir program has enjoyed considerable success over many years and is the most award winning organization on campus. Butch Broom was the director there for 20 plus years and supervised its rise to one of the best programs in the area. Current director, David Hill, has managed to continue that winning tradition. In the last seven years, the LJI Choir has won more UIL awards than any other school in the region. They received unanimous First Division, Superior ratings from every judge at UIL contest for the last two years in a row. They were the only choir program in the region to earn that distinction. Six out of the last seven years have also seen LJI place more students in the TMEA Junior High All-Region Choir than any other school in the region.

The Men’s Choir has won the prestigious Sweepstakes Award at UIL Contest every year for the past seven years. In 2004 and 2005 they, along with the Varsity Treble Choir, went to the Bluebonnet Classic Music Festival in San Antonio. Both choirs won First Division, Superior trophies as well as Best in Class awards. In 2005, the Men’s Choir distinguished itself even further by winning the Best of Festival trophy as the outstanding choir, high school or junior high, at the festival.

The Men’s Choir performs a wide variety of music, from Bach to the Beatles. They are also well rounded, participating in many school activities including drama, tech. ed., art, band, orchestra, honor society and student council, to name a few. Close to 90% of the boys in the group participate in sports as well.

The boys are very excited about the honor they have won and are looking forward to the opportunity to go to the convention and show off their talents. Trey Kibodeaux, the Men’s choir president said "We have all worked very hard this year to get to this point. This is a very talented group of guys. I am proud of what we have accomplished.  I am also grateful to have Mr. Hill as our choir director.” The Men's Choir will begin fundraising efforts this summer to allow them to make this journey to represent their school and community. They will also be starting rehearsals this summer, including clinics with some of the best choir directors in the state, so their performance will be as flawless as possible.
